My space

Right now my space is everywhere in the house! Sometimes, my daughter and I create in the kitchen. Here she is playing in her art journal! I often bring my art journal and pens into bed. I don't really like carrying things throughout the house.
When we moved into this house 3 years ago, my husband decided part of the unfinished basement would be my art area. I was SO excited to have my own area!! I wouldn't need to lug out box after box of supplies every time I wanted to create. He bought me this awesome table at IKEA. It is huge and completely adjustable. The metal cabinet is an antique doctor's cabinet that I bought from Anthropologie when I bought my first condo. I felt so grown up!

I have enough room to play in any medium (painting, drawing, art journaling, jewelry, soldering, mixed media, knitting, coptic stitch binding,etc.). I love learning and everything I create is self taught. I have always created and I can't think of a time when art wasn't part of my life.

I love having my own space where I can play and leave stuff out. I am able to just flow in and out! However, it is cold and I wish I had natural light. I also wish the walls were finished so I could make my space pretty. Maybe one day!
This is my baby Max. He is a Havanese that was rescued from a puppy mill. No matter what time it is, he is always with me in my space!
I LOVE creating with my almost 6 year old. I have learned to let her use my supplies - even the good stuff! I find her work inspiring and she reminds me how to let go. It is not about perfection!

I really love my paper stash. The Paper Source is one of my favorite stores, and recently I found some beautiful handmade paper at World Market. I love using this paper in my collage work in my art journals, but more recently I use it when I bind books.
I keep some of the books and magazines I find inspirational easily accessible. I find it helpful to reread them and always seem to find something new.
Our workout equipment is across from my area so I can fit in my workouts. I can't tell you how many times I've been on the stairclimber, been hit with an idea, jump off and paint/draw in my art journal. Sometimes I mix my physical workouts with my creative workouts!

  2. What a great table. I'm also in total awe of that doctor's cabinet, too. It looks like it holds a lot of supplies. Sounds like you are into as many media as I. I will be back to check out your blog soon. Thanks for sharing this really kid friendly and inspiring space.

  3. I love that you and your daughter create together!
Sometimes the best part about having a studio is being able to leave everything exactly where it is and not worry about the mess! Thank you for sharing your space with us. I'm thinking maybe I need to move my treadmill into the studio. Maybe I would actually get on it then!!!

  4. Love the doctors cabinet! I'm so glad to see another art space in a basement! I share mine with the laundry and a freezer. At least I can close off the utilities when I don't want to see them.

  6. I think it's wonderful that you and your daughter create together!
I wish I could have gotten my kids involved!
They are all grown now and think "mom's stuff"is a little weird.
    Oh well...enjoy the time!
I love the saw horse table...I am considering the narrow ones for my new dining table.
Have a wonderful rest of the weekend!

  7. You will make your creative space your own, in time do not be impatient, your family is what is important. We have all been where you are and it was not till our families were grown did we acquire our pretty craft rooms.
You have a great spot right now enjoy it.

  13. Your post/creative space brings back lots of memories for me of when my own children were similar in age to yours. The day WILL COME when you have the room you dream about! And you are so wise to encourage the creativity in your children. I LOVE that piece you purchased from Anthro...so much character!

  14. It's always great to have a space that you can leave as is, whether in a basement or a garage {like mine}. I am still discovering so many things I like to do, but using paper of any kind is my favorite. I love the ones you have pictured; such a great assortment.

  21. Love your daughters artwork and yes, you will one day be able to have time to turn it into whatever your dream is, I waited 30 years, and if I can do it anyone can. Your place is great, have fun creating and teaching your little one, I'm going to start teaching my Grand daughter in the fall when I have her for 2 days a week 1/2 day. Just enough time for her not to get bored and long enough to learn some old school art! Enjoyed my visit, enjoy the blog party hopping. XOXO

  22. Your space is terrific! You are right about creating wherever and I love the workout/studio combination. It's interesting how some of teh best ideas come when we aren't working but are working out! I had a Max when I was young - great name and a beautiful dog!

  23. Aren't we lucky to have spaces all our own? I like that you create with your daughter, and inspire her with your creativity. I'm a big Ikea fan, too, and have been eyeing up one of the leg units to mount my yarn swift and ball winder. Your dentist's cabinet is pretty darn cool, too! I hope you'll visit Brynwood and enter my giveaway when you get time. Thanks for sharing. Blessings to you and yours, Donna

  24. I love it that you include your daughter in your art world! I'm amazed at how often I hear mom's say they had to give up doing art since they had children and where's the wisdom in that!? I love that your workout space is close to your creative space.

If you wish, come and visit the blog of my daughter and me. We are only three months old (blogging) but have been making jewelry for fifteen years. (She is thirty now). We have a Maltese and a rescue dog that we think is a Bischon poodle mix and we adore them both. We have lots of varied interests, too. I love paper crafts (and Paper Source...and old books) and she loves vintage fashion.

Thanks for showing your spot and your adorable daughter. Daughters are just wonderful, aren't they?
