When we moved into this house 3 years ago, my husband decided part of the unfinished basement would be my art area. I was SO excited to have my own area!! I wouldn't need to lug out box after box of supplies every time I wanted to create. He bought me this awesome table at IKEA. It is huge and completely adjustable. The metal cabinet is an antique doctor's cabinet that I bought from Anthropologie when I bought my first condo. I felt so grown up!
I have enough room to play in any medium (painting, drawing, art journaling, jewelry, soldering, mixed media, knitting, coptic stitch binding,etc.). I love learning and everything I create is self taught. I have always created and I can't think of a time when art wasn't part of my life.
I love having my own space where I can play and leave stuff out. I am able to just flow in and out! However, it is cold and I wish I had natural light. I also wish the walls were finished so I could make my space pretty. Maybe one day!
This is my baby Max. He is a Havanese that was rescued from a puppy mill. No matter what time it is, he is always with me in my space!
I LOVE creating with my almost 6 year old. I have learned to let her use my supplies - even the good stuff! I find her work inspiring and she reminds me how to let go. It is not about perfection!
I really love my paper stash. The Paper Source is one of my favorite stores, and recently I found some beautiful handmade paper at World Market. I love using this paper in my collage work in my art journals, but more recently I use it when I bind books.
I keep some of the books and magazines I find inspirational easily accessible. I find it helpful to reread them and always seem to find something new.
Our workout equipment is across from my area so I can fit in my workouts. I can't tell you how many times I've been on the stairclimber, been hit with an idea, jump off and paint/draw in my art journal. Sometimes I mix my physical workouts with my creative workouts!

What a great table. I'm also in total awe of that doctor's cabinet, too. It looks like it holds a lot of supplies. Sounds like you are into as many media as I. I will be back to check out your blog soon. Thanks for sharing this really kid friendly and inspiring space.
ReplyDeleteI love that you and your daughter create together!
ReplyDeleteSometimes the best part about having a studio is being able to leave everything exactly where it is and not worry about the mess! Thank you for sharing your space with us. I'm thinking maybe I need to move my treadmill into the studio. Maybe I would actually get on it then!!!

Love the doctors cabinet! I'm so glad to see another art space in a basement! I share mine with the laundry and a freezer. At least I can close off the utilities when I don't want to see them.
ReplyDeleteGreat space. I love your doggie Max-I have a Max too. Great that you share a space with your daughter.
ReplyDeleteI think it's wonderful that you and your daughter create together!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could have gotten my kids involved!
They are all grown now and think "mom's stuff"is a little weird.
Oh well...enjoy the time!
I love the saw horse table...I am considering the narrow ones for my new dining table.
Have a wonderful rest of the weekend!
Blessings,
Donna
You will make your creative space your own, in time do not be impatient, your family is what is important. We have all been where you are and it was not till our families were grown did we acquire our pretty craft rooms.
ReplyDeleteYou have a great spot right now enjoy it.

You must have such fun creating with your daughter. Your space is just perfect for your needs. Many of us squeeze our space in wherever we can. Love that you can workout and run over and create.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like your space is exactly what you need. Your daughter's art by the way is fab! My doctor has his kids' art framed in various parts of his office...I've always thought that was really cool. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGreat space! Love that cabinet! I love that you create with your daughter... and let her use the good stuff! :) I'm sure it will be a wonderful memory she will always have. Thank you for the great tour!

Isn't it fun to have a dedicated creative space!? What fun to be able to share it with your child. I love your paper stash and the metal cabinet is awesome!
ReplyDeleteYour post/creative space brings back lots of memories for me of when my own children were similar in age to yours. The day WILL COME when you have the room you dream about! And you are so wise to encourage the creativity in your children. I LOVE that piece you purchased from Anthro...so much character!
ReplyDeleteIt's always great to have a space that you can leave as is, whether in a basement or a garage {like mine}. I am still discovering so many things I like to do, but using paper of any kind is my favorite. I love the ones you have pictured; such a great assortment.
ReplyDeleteYour blog is refreshing and inspiring. I no longer have small children, but remember how much fun it was to make art with them. Your daughter is getting a wonderful start to her creative life! I love your doctor's cabinet..and your sweet Max. I have a rescue dog, too. If you don't mind, I will come back and visit again. Thanks for the tour...
ReplyDeleteYeah, another mommy-daughter team! I love (well, usually . . . mine is 4 and gets distracted easily!) creating with my little one. Your space is wonderful and your art journals are so bright and full of life! I love them. Can't wait to see more as I am now a follower, Kristin xo
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that you and your daughter create together. You're making memories that will be with her forever.
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with your work table!! That looks so functional. And you have plenty of room to spread out. Thanks for the tour of your studio.
Oh my goodness I hope you are framing and displaying some of your daughters art - love it! I think it is wonderful that you share that common bond of creativity and that you foster it in each other. Love the doctors cabinet - so cool. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing space you have created! You have inspired me to add to my own crafting area.
ReplyDeleteI adore all of your storage solutions.
A wonderfully inspiring creative space...thank you for sharing it with us : ) Hope you will stop by Julie's Open Window and take a peek inside...
ReplyDeleteHope you will stop by friend Sarah's blog..she teaches art journaling in the UK and I think you would enjoy her site...she is at The Art of Moodling.
Love your daughters artwork and yes, you will one day be able to have time to turn it into whatever your dream is, I waited 30 years, and if I can do it anyone can. Your place is great, have fun creating and teaching your little one, I'm going to start teaching my Grand daughter in the fall when I have her for 2 days a week 1/2 day. Just enough time for her not to get bored and long enough to learn some old school art! Enjoyed my visit, enjoy the blog party hopping. XOXO
ReplyDeleteYour space is terrific! You are right about creating wherever and I love the workout/studio combination. It's interesting how some of teh best ideas come when we aren't working but are working out! I had a Max when I was young - great name and a beautiful dog!
ReplyDeleteAren't we lucky to have spaces all our own? I like that you create with your daughter, and inspire her with your creativity. I'm a big Ikea fan, too, and have been eyeing up one of the leg units to mount my yarn swift and ball winder. Your dentist's cabinet is pretty darn cool, too! I hope you'll visit Brynwood and enter my giveaway when you get time. Thanks for sharing. Blessings to you and yours, Donna
ReplyDeleteI love it that you include your daughter in your art world! I'm amazed at how often I hear mom's say they had to give up doing art since they had children and where's the wisdom in that!? I love that your workout space is close to your creative space.
ReplyDeleteHow fun is that to include your daughter and let her play and create with you.. They do grow up so fast, I know my little girl is 22 now.. It just seems like yesterday she was 6 and I was teaching her how to knit.. Thank for sharing your space, Hugs, Linda
ReplyDeleteVery cool, indeed! I love, love that old metal doctor's cabinet and that Ikea table is perfect.
ReplyDeleteI would love for you to visit with me and stroll through my studio..it's been a labor of love to put together and now after a year in our home putting everything together as it should be I feel like I can "spread my wings" and fly!
Have a wonderful day,
Stephanie ♥
I know just how you feel. I too wish for an craft room or office. I never give up hope that one day that will happen and I am sure that will happen for you too. Your daughter is lovely and you do a great job keeping organized. I love it.

ReplyDeleteYou are having a lot of fun. I am glad that you have the materials and opportunity to create in manu mediums and that you create with your daughter!!!
ReplyDeleteIf you wish, come and visit the blog of my daughter and me. We are only three months old (blogging) but have been making jewelry for fifteen years. (She is thirty now). We have a Maltese and a rescue dog that we think is a Bischon poodle mix and we adore them both. We have lots of varied interests, too. I love paper crafts (and Paper Source...and old books) and she loves vintage fashion.
Thanks for showing your spot and your adorable daughter. Daughters are just wonderful, aren't they?

Wow, a basement -so lucky that is great. The one thing that stops me from staring a project is , having to clean up-for someone coming over to our home, or the kids friends- I would love a basement.. Great Area, my daughters help me too.. Love that.. Im a new Follower, so ill be back to see what all you come up with in that great Creative Space.
ReplyDeletekarryann

I love that you and your daughter can share the fun in creating together. Love your work space.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is grown up now, but we still get together to make things, now she brings her four children with her. They love to do paperpunch and rubberstamping art.
I love your blog! I could have written your bio... except my daughter is nine and I have a border collie. I can't wait to see more of your work. You've got a great style in art and writing. Keep in touch, okay?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tour.... I like your storage idea for paper in the magazine rack - cool. Happy creating!
ReplyDeleteOh to have a space of our own, one where we can just let things be. I have unfinished walls, too, but I have decided that will not stop me from making it pretty, those things can be moved when we get to finishing up the walls.

That's awesome that you have a separate place where you can leave projects out...and even better that your daughter will create with you. I sure miss mine...they are away at college.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your creative space with us. Have a thoughtful Thursday. ~Natalie
I am slowly working my way through the list of bloggers on the where bloggers create list. I have had a great time and enjoyed seeing your creative space. It is great that you create with your daughter.
ReplyDeleteThe memories you are creating with your daughter are ones you both will treasure. Mine is a basement studio too and much as I'd love a window, I'm pretty happy to have someplace that is mine. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI could actually picture you having an "Aha" moment and jumping off to go and create, or maybe it was actually me! Would love to have all that space. Thank you for sharing~ Sherry w/Scrapping With Sherry
